Video: Comparing Photographic Prints

So now we have 4 versions of the print I was working on from that test print. And, as I said before, I picked, I wanted to do it, the exposure at 75 seconds, which is kind of a long exposure but it's okay. And in this tray here are different version I make and I'm going to begin to talk about the subtle difference in printing. You know when you first start, you might make a print that looks like this one on the bottom and actually just be very happy with it. But one of the cool things about photography and just art in general, is that as you get more experienced, you begin to see how you can make, visually make, what you do more interesting and more rich in a way. So if I look at this print, it looks a little flat down here to me. And that was, I did it with a number 3 filter and what I said to myself was "well, I want to make it a little more rich. I want the darks to be darker and the whites to be whiter" and so I switched the filter to a number 4 filter. And you can see in here it's a lot more contrasty. You can also look at the flag. You know, print making is a very detailed process and the more you do it, the more detailed oriented you'll be come. But that is sort of some of the subtle differences in these prints. And I'm going to talk more about this in a little bit because really it's one of the most personal things that you can do in photography, in darkroom photography, is make a print the way you want to do it.
