"ATHENA REICH: In this segment, I'm going to talk about what you do when you book your venue. Okay. So say, you're on the phone and Susan, the booker says, "Yes! I'd love to have you come play on October 8th." Now is the time when you get to your database and you take a really good note. "Great, what time will my set be?" "Oh, at 8 o'clock." "For how long?" "For one hour." Is there a soundcheck? Will somebody be doing soundcheck? You can encourage. What is the pay? Sometimes there's pay, sometimes there's not. You can be hopeful and thrive for it. Here's the thing I like to do. I like to kinda get them to give me a meal 'cause even if they can't pay me, they can feed me. And believe me like-money's is tight on the road. So, "Oh, are you able to feed me?" So, really try and get the details. Also, "Do you have a place I can recommend that I can stay for the night?" Sometimes they have a deal with a hotel. They could put you in for free or for cheap. Or sometimes they say, "Hey, you know what? You can say at my house." And depending on your comfort level, you can go for that. So, really, don't be afraid to ask for the details and ask for the things you want in a gentle but courteous way."
