"ATHENA REICH: In this clip, I'm going to talk about who you sing to in your audition. You need to completely personalize this song. So you need to find--you know, read the song, sing the song, what is this song about? Who in my personal life can I sing this to? Who would I sing this to? For example, in this song "Shy" from "Once Upon a Mattress," it's about feeling shy, and about feeling nervous, and I always think about singing to my partner because sometimes, I feel really neurotic in my relationship. And so, I kind of substitute neurotic for shy. I think, [START SONG] "I've always been shy...," [END SONG] and I've got to like, "I just like this and love me for who I am and I can't help it. I know it's wrong that I'm neurotic, but really, I'm kind of neurotic." So, I--you need to sing to that person, and you know what's a really great trick is think before you go in the audition, what is this person wearing? You know, my partner, what is this person wearing? What clothes? What hat? And that makes it real for you. Really sing to that person in your life."
