Series Summary

When we think of the theater, one image before all others comes to mind: two iconic masks side by side, one happy and the other sad. These masks represent the facade of acting, the range of human emotion, the masks we all where, and/or a host of other interpretations. Performance artists take the idea of theater, conceptual art, and visual art to make a new critical art. A culture gives away its opinion of human subjectivity in the way it constructs its masks, and a persona is a kind of mask worn by many pop or performance artists. The masks of Carnival are also complicated social constructions that both celebrate and reinforce boundaries at the same time.

Video Transcript

"This is all about Performance Art. What is Performance Art? Is it music? Is it theatre? Is it Visual Arts? Well, it's all of that and it's none of that. Does it involve props? Is it gimmiky? It's all of that and it's none of that. Performance Art basically comes from the Visual Art tradition, it's conceptual art but it adds theatre, movement, music, props, visual arts, video, multi-media, you name it, it can do it. Performance Art is where you can do, basically, whatever you want as long as you have a concept. I mean, Performance Art is freedom. Freedom for your soul, freedom for expression, you can do anything if you are a Performance Artist. And in this series, we're going to break it down, step by step so that you can create your own Performance Art piece."
