Normally, when you pick out a rosin at any music store; you'll find that it comes in a round cake, or a square cake; probably even a rectangular cake. My particular rosin is a round cake; wrapped in a fine cloth. This protects the rosin from drying out, and from becoming too hard, or too melted to use. When you first get your rosin it won't look like this. Mine is very well loved, and very well used. It will be a fine amber color, and you won't be able to get much dust from it when you're pressing it against your bow strings. What you'll need to do is probably take a nail file, or some other sharp instrument, and scratch the surface. Once you've done that, you can start rosining your violin. You'll start at the frog of the bow, and you'll slowly move up and down the bow several times. Depending on the type of hair that's on your bow, you'll find that you may need to rosin it several times up and down, just to make sure that you have enough rosin on it to make sound. An unrosined bow will make virtually no sound, and a very little rosined bow will make a very whispy sound against the violin strings.
