Summary: Learn how to avoid certain conversation tops for Thanksgiving dinner in order to survive the holidays with your family in this free advice video.
"Hello. I'm Matt Cail and on behalf of Expert Village, I'm going to show you today how to survive a big family Thanksgiving. An old adage goes "you should never talk about religion and politics with family because those two topics can be so tensious and tend to just produce conflict out of nothing." Now, actually, I've found in some circumstances, you can talk about both those and any other controversial news topic. The important thing to remember is the people involved. So, this is my general tip: you need to keep an eye on people who can be a little emotional and who can get a little insulting if somebody doesn't exactly see the world through their point of view. Those are the people to watch out for on any topic. If there are people who are more laid back, relaxed, who can have someone totally disagree to their face and they don't take personal affront or defense, those are the people who can talk about religion and politics until the sun comes up if they want, and that's fine. The important thing to keep in mind is though, if you know there are some of those hot-tempered types, to try to well just generally avoid topics that can breed conflict. And this can be hard to predict. But if you know, if you happen to have some inside knowledge that they feel very strongly about certain car brands, you then don't want to have someone go in there and talk about how those specific car brands are garbage. So basically, this is more about monitoring individual people rather than a particular topic. You can play it safe and totally rule out religion and politics from Thanksgiving day. That's no problem, I've seen plenty of people do it. But, I tend to lean towards just watching out for specific personalities rather than just avoiding or censoring yourself from all topics. "
