What is Blu-Ray: High Definition DVD Players

"TONY RAMIREZ: Hi, my name is Tony Ramirez and this is the high-definition movies and players. The Blu-ray disc, that's this one right here. Of course, just as it says, it's actually blue. The cover of the--excuse me, the cover of each DVD or Blu-ray disc is blue. That's how you can tell the major difference. Of course, this is the logo right here, it is sponsored by Sony more than anything else, but it also has Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony of course and TDK. They've got a lot of companies backing behind them. Disc format--the biggest difference between this and HD DVD is these discs hold a minimum of 25 gigs and a maximum of 50 gigs. Right now, each movie is about 25 gigs long--excuse me, 25 gigs in space. There is the 50 disc that they haven't proven to work the best yet, but there's supposed to be a 50 gigs disc that's going to come out--have even more information on it. The discs are the same, pretty much just like any other DVD, its 5 1/2 inch disc. The only difference between Blu-ray and any other disc is they're actually thinner. There's no other difference. This thinner disc actually is the main cause of these Blu-ray disc costing a little bit more where in HD DVD it can be around you know, $29.99, this DVD could be anywhere between $34.95, maybe even a little bit higher. So Blu-rays do cost a little bit more because they are physically different, but resolution wise, sound wise, quality wise, there's really no difference yet. So again, it's going to be a choice between Blu-ray and HD DVD, but that's Blu-ray."
