Now I'm going to start talking about the supplies you need for your do-it-yourself light kit. These are pretty much all coming from a hardware store. You might have to look at some other places for a couple of things, but pretty much mostly from a hardware store. The first thing for us is your lights. I'm using just these work clamp lights. I can't off the top of my head remember how much they are. I've been using them since college so they hold up well, a little bit dirty but whatever. It's just a real simple clamp light. It's got the metal interior to give you a little bit more reflection. Here's the clamp for us down here. The next thing I have here is just a bar towel I bought. That's all it is is a bar towel. What I use it for is I don't want to be at someone's house and clamping on something that might leave a mark or something, so this is just a little bit of protection. Also, if you're clamping on something really thin, this provides some extra padding so your clamp actually gets some tension and your light's not going to fall down in the middle of your shot, which has happened to me before and which is why I picked up these bar towels. The next things, of course, are these bulbs. I like using the fluorescent just because they use less energy, which is, you know, great for the environment and all that good stuff. Less energy also means you could be using lower-grade extension cords. A low-grade extension cord typically maxes out at 100 watts and these lights put out a hundred watts but only use 27, so I'm going to be fine on my extension cord. I've got two sets of bulbs: daylight temperature and the indoor tungsten. I already talked about that. Here we go with one of the most important things you will need in lighting. C47s is what they call these on the set. They're just wooden clothespins, but you can find yourself using them for everything. Buy a huge bag and keep them with you. Right here I have what I call a 'stinger'. It's just a real short extension cord. Pick up a long one too, but pick up a couple of these stinger extension cords as well and make sure that they can handle the wattage that you're going to be working with. I don't really have to worry about that because I'm using these energy-efficient bulbs. The next thing I have is just plain old parchment paper. This is real cheap, it's used in cooking, and what I use it for is diffusion. I take my C47s and just clamp it onto my light and I've got instant diffusion. Otherwise it's kind of harsh with just a light bulb shining straight on somebody's face. So, those are your basic supplies. One other thing is this duffel bag that I use. I use this to carry everything around. You can see it's a lot of small stuff, so get something to carry it around in as well. Those are your basic supplies for your do-it-yourself light kit.
