"Hi! I'm Karina Fraley for Expert Village and tonight I'm sharing some Halloween safety tips for trick or treating. Let's talk about costumes. First and foremost, you need to look for a costume that's flame retardant. Most of the ones that you buy off the shelf at the store are these days for children. If for whatever reason you decide to go homemade and you're not going to use flame retardant fabric, at least be mindful of the sleeve length and the flow of the costume that you're making. Make sure that it's snug to the body and not dangling all over the place. You don't want your child swiping the flame of a pumpkin or anything like that and catching fire on the way to get their candy. Also, make sure that it's an appropriate length. If the dress is too long, or the cape or robe are too long, your child could either very easily trip going up or down the stairs. Another child could step on your child's costume and they can both just hit the ground. Also, draw strings. Anything around the neck you're going to want to be very, very mindful of, especially if a child is wearing a cape that's tight around their neck. If the cape is too long and somebody else comes up behind them and steps on them, that could really injure your child's neck. Be very careful with that. Also, shoes. make sure that your child is wearing size appropriate shoes. Shoes that are too big are very easy to trip on, and shoes that are too tight are going to quickly put a Halloween evening to end. Your child is going to want to go home because their feet hurt. These are just some things that you're going to want to keep in mind to make sure that your child has a very safe and Happy Halloween."
