"Hi, I'm Jennifer Cail and on behalf of Expert Village I'm going to show you the proper way to baste a turkey and how to make delicious gravy for your traditional Thanksgiving Day meal. We are now ready to put the turkey in the oven. Now first we are going to have the oven preheated to 400 degrees. You are going to start the turkey at a slightly higher temperature so that it starts cooking and then you are going to lower the temperature. This is done with numerous other things such as pumpkin pie, so that the temperature can adjust well while the turkey is already in there. Rather than starting it at a different time and this helps to speed up the cooking. Now notice how I pulled out the oven shelf and this is so that you are not reaching into the hot oven with a heavy turkey. My turkey is only ten pounds but yours is probably going to be a lot bigger, you just want to gently slide the turkey in. Once you have been basting several times and the turkey is going to bake and have some of the juices rundown, you have to be very careful that the roasting pan doesn't overflow with the juices. Also when you are pulling back and forth make sure it doesn't splash out and burn you. You see that the turkey is all covered with the foil and it is ready to cook."
