How to Write Names on Sugar Skulls

"AMANDA CLAIRE: And you know, like I said, a lot of times these are generally made for specific memory of someone that you love that's passed on so I can-I can--so for example my grandfather, we call him "poppy". Right? Which is kind of a Spanish name to say grandfather, grandfather. So I can write that on a piece of paper. It's kind of a traditional thing to do. I'll just kind of do a little bit of fancy writing and I'm just kinda cut it out and this is really kind of a traditional thing to do, is to just have a name that you attach to a particular sugar skull to commemorate someone that you love, someone from your family. I'll just, I don't know, I'll just go ahead and put it on this one, a little bit of royal icing, again, and you can just put it right on the forehead. I mean that's actually kind of a traditional thing to do. And now I could keep that at home. I could give it to maybe mother that was my grandfather's daughter. So give it to someone in the family, take it to the cemetery, whatever I want. I mean, it seems a little grim just because it is kind of--it is a remembrance of death, but as you can see it's also very festive and it's really more kind of the celebration of those that we knew that have passed on and that's kind of what those mark is all about and kind of what this tradition is about. It's about celebration of people that we knew and that we were glad to have them in our lives. So there you have it. There is a lot of different variation. There are different kinds of molds you can get. You know you can make sure sugar of different colors. You can decorate them with icing, paper, colored foil; whatever you want, and just have fun with it and [SPEAKS FOREIGN LANGUAGE]."
