"In 1977, Hallmark broke away from just having yarn ornaments, and plain glass balls. They started branching into different subjects. They started making ornaments that contained part of the family, so that if you wanted to give an ornament as a Christmas gift, you could get a ball or a little figure that had Mom on it, or Daughter, or even to commemorate events like having a baby. They also came out with the beginning of their cartoon characters. In 1977, we have the first Disney ornament. It's dated on the back, and it has the Disney characters on it. They also started with Snoopy ornaments, or Peanuts characters. It has grown from the ball ornaments, to different characters that match those cartoons. "
