on 8/2/2008 She uses the ball of the foot, which I see is the usual for front kicks, and, in the crescent kick-roundhouse kick video, she uses the instep for the roundhouse. My instructor uses the ball of the foot for both front and roundhouse kicks, but I like to practice throwing the heel into the front kick and using the instep in the roundhouse so as not to jam the toes.

Video Transcript

"This is Yun Yang Wang from Wang’s Martial Art and on behalf of the Expert Village and this is Ms. Esmeralda Sanchez, one of our black belts and in this clip we’re going to demonstrate front kick. And the position of the front kick is in the mountain climbing stance and a snap motion and using the ball part of the foot to make contact and the legs straight, later on you can adjust different height accordingly. Notice the knee needs to come up first for the kicking and hold the position and the ball part of the foot gives the extra reach, top part use to stay up straight and the leg needs to be straight also, the supporting leg bending slightly. Now we’re demonstrating the front kick to the kicking shield. Notice you’re using the ball part of the foot to make contact to the target. "
