Series Summary

Sailing is a popular pastime in the coastal areas around the world. It is a skillful hobby where a person controls the motion of a sailboat in a race, on a cruise, or on a day sailing course. Maneuvering the sailboat can be tricky and movement is controlled by arranging sails to catch the force of the wind and using that to guide the boat. Basic sail techniques include steering and turning, running, reaching, sailing upwind, reducing sail, sail trimming, hull trimming, and heeling. Familiarizing yourself with the sailboat that you are steering is one of the first steps to learning how to sail.

In this series of videos, you will get a firm introduction to sailing from our expert. Beginning with a video clip about the sailboat, you will learn how to efficiently sail a boat. One of the most important things to remember when beginning a new hobby is safety. Learn about life jackets and personal flotation devices used to keep you safe when sailing. Challenge your sailboat knowledge with video segments on raising and rigging the main sail. Learn what “jibing” is and how to control the sails with different maneuvers of the sails. Get tips on tacking and coming about as well as steering with the tiller and rudder. Watch these videos to refresh your sailing skills or to learn a new hobby!

"Hi my name is Tyler Pierce and welcome to Offshore Sailing School, we’re here in Jersey city at the Liberty Landing Marina, this is one of 8 of our locations. We’re also in Tortola, and the British Virgin Islands, the Bahamas and we’ve got three Florida locations, one down in the Florida Keys Hawks Cay Resort, we’re on Captive Island and we’re in St. Petersburg, Florida, up here in the New York area, we’re in Jersey City, Chelsea piers and at Fort Schuyler at the SUNY Maritime college in the Bronx. What I want to do is introduce a couple of key ideas and concepts on how to get into the sport of sailing and get sailing safely and efficiently. "
