Series Summary

Defense wins championships. Never a popular maxim with young basketball players who would much rather score points or make fancy passes than guard their man, this phrase begins to sounds like nails on a chalkboard as players advance through the ranks of organized basketball. Coaches repeat it over and over, trying to inspire their team to hustle and rebound when they don't have the ball. What makes this maxim doubly irritating is that it's true most of the time. Unless a team scores every time down the court, they will have to stop the opponents at key times during the game. And for those players who don't have the skills to score 20 points a game, they can still start or get significant playing time by working hard at the less glamorous aspects of the game.

In this series of free basketball instruction videos, our expert will demonstrate the basics of rebounding and playing defense. He will show you how to guard the dribbler and the shooter, then get into rebounding position one the shot goes up. Watch this series and you will know the groundwork for improving your skills as a defender. The hard work and attitude are up to you.

Video Transcript

"Hi this is Travis on behalf of Expert Village and we are going to talk about rebounding. And rebounding is simply when you are grabbing the ball whether it's offensive, your team is shooting at the basket, and they shoot and miss and you actually are able to grab the ball as it comes off of the rim, that’s an offensive rebound. Likewise on the other end, if you’re on defense and the other team shoots and misses and you grab the ball after the missed shot, that’s a defensive rebound. So rebounding is simply on a missed shot getting the ball off of the rim and we are going to talk about all kinds of different ways to rebound in drills and how to best do it. So rebounding grabbing the ball, whether it's offensive of defensive off of the missed shot, that’s going to be a rebound. "
