Please watch the entirety of this video series before you do anything silly that you will regret later, that is if you even survive your ill-advised actions. This is not a series telling you how to stop a bullet with your bare hands. Watching a few how-to video clips will not turn you into Superman or your chest into a bullet-proof vest. This series is about strategy, planning and careful action. The best way to defend against a gun is to make sure that you don’t get shot.
In this series of martial arts self defense videos, Tres Tew shows you how to defend yourself against a gun-wielding attacker without a weapon of your own. Your goal is to push barrel aside and twist your body out of line of fire. Pushing barrel alone is not going to give you enough time to get out of the way, so you must move your body at the same time that you push the gun away from you. Once you get close enough to the shooter, grab or knock the gun out of their hands. Here at Expert Village, we advise that the only sure way to defend yourself against a situation with gun-wielding assailant is to stay out of such a situation in the first place.
"My name is Tres Tew. I'm an instructor here at Assyria's Tew Martial Arts. On behalf of Expert Village I'm going to be showing you how to defend yourself with open hands against either rifles or shot guns. I'd like to talk to you a little bit about the different types of long guns. There are basically two, there's the shot gun and the rifle. The differences we'll be going over here. Okay now with a shot gun this is a smooth boar weapon and generally the shells are inserted here and when you chamber the round it goes into here. Generally they're small pellets in the shell that are projected; there are many of them so when it fires it's spread out over a long range. Now when handling live guns you never want to have ammunition anywhere near it. You want to make sure that it's empty. You can do this by working the action, making sure all the rounds are ejected before you do anything. Also make sure that the safety is off and when you're not training with it make sure the gun is either pointed straight up or straight down, okay. You don't want to be swinging it across and make sure that you are aware of the direction of the muzzle. Okay and the second type of gun we have is a rifle. This is a combat rifle it's an M4. Now with rifles it's a single round, it's not multiple small beads. A rifle generally goes a lot farther because it is a single round and it's able to go through the air with a little bit more weight. Now the reason it's called rifling there's a spiral down the barrel. The spiraling puts a spin on the bullet so that when it goes out of the gun it's able to travel farther. With these it's a straight line shot it doesn't spread out so the effects of it are different. Also you want to make sure that you've got the safety on not off. Make sure that the safety is on and there are no rounds in the chamber if you're training with a live gun. Now this, this is an air soft gun. We use this for training with a little bit more realism. You can load the air soft pellets into it and kind of simulate your speed and feel out whether or not you're being shot. So those are pretty much the two different types of long guns there are."
