" Tres Tew here. I'm an instructor at Yeshua's Ryu Martial Arts and on behalf of Expert Village, I'm going to be talking to you about the expandable baton. Now we are going to be talking about how to use your baton to simultaneously block an attack and extend the baton. This can be very deceptive if someone doesn't see the baton. They see just the tip. They are not sure what it is. If Nick were to come at me with a slash, what I would want to do is extend the baton and block at the same time. That gives me...that keeps me from having to block it with my hand and possibly cut my hand open or whatever. So what I want to do is extend it at the same time that I'm blocking. So it's not open. It's kind of like a quick draw. In the old West, a person would have their gun on their hip and they would draw it as fast as you can. So, you are drawing your baton as quick as you can, but you still have to extend it. So, you are extending it in the same movement as your block. From there, you can follow up to create...You are blocking to create an opening, so you follow up. Just keep going to different vital areas of the body; anything that will keep him from attacking you again with that knife. A knife has an edge on it. It's going to cut you. This leaves blunt trauma force. It may cause internal bleeding, but again, it's not open bleeding, so it's a little bit less deadly than a knife. So, that's how to simultaneously extend your baton and block a strike; a very effective tool."
