"Hi, I'm Tres Tew. I'm an instructor here at Yeshua's Ryu Martial Arts and today I'm going to be talking to you on behalf of Expert Village, about how to use a knife for self defense. Now I wanted to talk a little bit about throwing knives and how to throw your knife. Generally you are not going to throw your knife with a handle. You'll flip it over to the blade just like this, pull it back and release. You're probably not going to want to throw your knife unless you have two or you have a couple of throwing knives for that purpose. It's great for someone who's at a pretty good distance. You can just throw it if you have a spare knife. Also, you want to (when looking for a throwing knife), you want to check the balance of your knife. You should hold it right on the center of the blade where the blade meets the handle. If it's able to balance, then you know that's a good throwing knife. Another counterexample, a K-bar is probably not a good throwing knife. It's going to fall over just like that and I've got to meet it almost right. Pretty much you want something that you are going to be able to balance and when you throw it, it turns over with equal rotation. So, again, thrown weapons, try not to use it too much unless you have a spare knife or it's the last shot at something. Really, you have to practice quite a bit before you become proficient in it. So, again, it's there but you don't want to waste your knife, if it comes down to throwing it and then he picks it up off the ground and hurts you with it. So that is throwing weapons and how to use them."
