"One thing when your doing a day hike or a multi day hiked to consider is if you have bad knees or a sore back bring some sort of trekking pole. You don't necessary have to have a pair but a pair is very beneficial. If you consider the fact that if you?re hiking in an area where there are a lot of hills a lot of ups and downs, it's really harder going down hill than it is going uphill. It's harder on your body. Because if you think about it, if you just sort of stop and think about it, when you plant your foot going down hill your foot stops and your upper body continues moves forward. So your muscles from your feet, your ankles, your calves, your quads, everything from that point up starts holding back and that puts this forward type of pressure on your knees. If you have trekking poles one in each hand out in front of you, basically what you?re doing is preventing that forward pressure on your knees with your upper body as opposed to doing it with just your knees. And so that really eliminates a lot of stress on your knees, on your shins, and that sort of things, which really makes your day hike or your multi day hike a lot more enjoyable and it actually allows you to go a lot further."
