"When you're navigating your day hike the first thing you want to do is make sure you have the proper equipment. Some of the things that you would want to consider would be a compass, for instance, and a map. You can navigate a compass with a map if you have basic compassing skills. Another thing with today's modern technology is a GPS unit. There are several different hand held GPS units that you can purchase which will allow you to know exactly where you've gone, where you've come from. You can do breadcrumb, what they call "breadcrumb trails", which allows you to mark specific points that you've passed so when you get ready to come back you can easily find your way back with the breadcrumb trail. And the old fashioned way, like I said earlier, is the compass and map. If you have a map and you have a compass and you know how to sight yourself in, it's really pretty challenging but more rewarding than the easy way of having just a GPS unit."
