Series Summary

In these videos you will learn an excellent set of beginner pilates exercises. Even though it has been around since the early 1900s, this form of exercise has only recently burst into the mainstream exercise community within the last few years. In this series you will see demonstrations of several different pilates exercises that can be performed at home with no additional equipment. Exercises such as the “full teaser” and the “single-leg-criss-cross” are great exercises for building core strength and toning your abdominals. Named after its founder Joseph Pilates, pilates is a great way to exercise your inner core muscles. Did you know however, that it is also beneficial to improving your body’s flexibility? Exercises such as the “double leg stretch,” the “front support stretch” and the “c-spine stretch” not only help you get in shape, but also help improve your flexibility. Learn these and many other great pilates exercises in this pilates series for beginners.

on 8/2/2008 This is a great series. Thank You Susan. The title or caption seems to be the sort key so I'm confused about the logical sequence of the series. Other than the intro, I would like to know your recommended sequence of this beginner series- which exercise to do 1st, 2nd , 3rd, and so forth. Thanks for posting this helpful site. D in NC

on 8/2/2008 this is an excellent "pilates 101" instruction series. Ms. Perry demonstrates and articulates the instruction with great clarity. It's evident that she teaches mat pilates on a regular basis because she has hoaned the skill of talking and adequately instructing simultaneously - which is not easy! I recommend her video series to beginners, advanced and instructors as well.

Video Transcript

"Hi. My name is Susan Perry and what you are about to see today are 15 individual clips of individual Pilate movements. Let me explain that ideally Pilates need to run fluidly, and that's how you overload your core. So what you will see today are individual clips but they do need to move in transition with each other. If you have any lower back problems, please consult your doctor before doing these. This is a beginner mat Pilates session. And, enjoy yourself. One more thing. Breathing is very important in Pilates. You've got to breathe, inhale, expand your ribs out. Exhale. Bring your navel towards your tailbone. That way you keep your abs engaged and your core and back is happy. "
