"Hi! This is Tamir Elterman on behalf of expertvillage.com and in this clip we will be talking about the defensive stance. The proper stance is similar to a boxer’s stance. You want to stand with your feet, shoulder width apart and with one foot slightly ahead of the other in the direction that the offensive player is moving. Your knees are bent and your weight is distributed equally on the balls of your feet. Yours hands are waist high and slightly extended. Your back is straight and leaning slightly forward and your head is up. A defensive player needs to be able to move in several specific ways. In addition to moving forward and backward you need to be able to use the shuffle. This is useful in order to move from side-to-side and it is the best position for checking because it allows you to maintain your angle and balance. The drop step is another common technique used by the defenders to regain and/or maintain position if an offensive player comes towards you to dodge, as he makes a move, you take a step back with one foot, all the while keeping your hips squared to the attacker.
