Series Summary

Skiing has always been a relatively popular sport. It's fun, exciting and a great workout. As all things do, however, skiing evolved into other forms of powder transportation. Snowboarding is one of those offshoots. It became popular in the late 1970's and early 80's because of men like Dimitrije Milovich, Jake Burton and Tom Sims. They were just a few of the early snowboarding pioneers that took a then, hobby and turned it into the gigantic sport it is today. It was not until 1985 that it was officially declared a sport but as many would let it be known snowboarding was always in the hearts and minds of adventurers in the 70's.

"My name's Terry Oneil. I'm a certified snowboard instructor here at Arizona Snowbowl. Just want to take a minute and talk a little bit about soft goods. Alright, so what we're going to talk about now is the upper half of your outerwear. One of the most important things to know is you never want to have your arms exposed. You always want to be wearing some sort of long sleeve, and make sure that's waterproof. You are going to a cold area, so you always want to have that nice warm jacket. There's different styles of jackets. You can go from springtime fleeces to powdery thick jackets. One of the styles we have right here is a thick jacket for the powder. You can tell it's kind of big; it's kind of bulky. What it does is it helps you protect you from that coldness. Usually with thick jackets like this, you're always going to have fleece or something on the inside to keep you nice and warm. If you move to a springtime jacket, you notice it's a little bit thinner. You can shake it a little bit. What this does is pretty much just blocks you from the wind and the water. Basically, you don't-in the springtime you don't want anything too thick. You're going to get hot and dehydrated. But during the winter, you want something thick. It's going to keep you nice and warm. Alright, so what we're going to talk about now is the lower half of your outerwear. What you want to have is nice, waterproof pants. You do not want to be wearing jeans or sweatpants, something that's going to absorb the water. If you sit down or you fall, you're going to get wet. Waterproof pants are the way to go. What happens with these-these are made specifically for snowboarding or skiing. You can get them in different styles, different colors, stuff like that. But what happens is they're waterproof, very high thread count waterproof. What's going to happen is water is going to bounce off it, and the good thing about these is it helps you bend. In snowboarding and skiing, you want to be able to bend your knees. And if you're in jeans or something, you're not going to be able to get that flexibility that you want."
