Summary: Learn a technique for cleaning the horses hoof called picking - free horseback riding lesson on video.
" Hi my name is Sarah Stetner. I'm an expert horse rider on behalf of Expert Village. This video is about getting prepare to ride English and so we justed put the saddle on. Just cinched him up and now we are just going to go ahead and pick the horses hoofs. Which that he does have really muddy hoofs because he was standing in the mud so look at that big ole ball. So this is a hoof pick. Pick on one side. Hoof brush on the other. So we are just going to go ahead and get all the mud out of his feet. It is just like cleaning his feet. I do this every time before I ride and every time after I ride. You can press as hard as you want a horse does not feel this. The only thing that they do feel is right by the raw which I would show you that part of the hoof as well. So there is one foot and I have three more to go. So I am continuing on to pick this part of the foot. He does have a pad in his foot this is called the bar shoe. It is his deform foot is what I call it. He has corrective shoeing so that is why he has that. Now I'm going to go ahead and move to this back foot. It is really muddy out here as you can see. So the part that I was telling you about is the raw area this is the most sensitive part for the horses hoof and as soon as I get it all cleaned out there is some rocks in there that is why we do this. Is because you don't want the horse to have rocks in his foot when he is moving because then it could get on in the hoofs and make him lame. So this is the parts of the hoof right here. This is the hoof raw this part right here there is a usual line right there but it is muddy. This right here is the frog this is the most sensitive part right here so be careful when you are poking the horses hoof you can do anything you want just be careful with this frog area it is the most sensitive area. So that is how you pick a horses hoof."
