"SCOTT BROWDER: Hi! Now we're going to talk about doing the same thing, a defensive shot except for to the backhand side. So what we want to focus on is again putting some top spin or you could actually with either side you could put a slice to it, but chances are it's going to float on you and I mean, that's all you can do with the ball because the angle of the shot then you're stuck but ideally you want to be able to hit top spin on most to your shots just to be able to bring the ball down quickly down onto the table. So we'll focus on a top spin defensive return with the backhand side. So again, it's the same thing, you're in your ready position, the ball comes to a position of the table where it's hard for you to get an offensive shot off, so all is you're going to be doing is stepping, you got your feet in a slightly farther than shoulder width, you're going to turn and you're going to point your left foot in that direction of your back hand and then you're going to even take your step with your right hand and come through low to high, trying to go towards the net with your arm at the same time and come over the ball even though it's way out here, you should still be able to get a descent amount of pace to the shot and some spin on it but it's not going to be like I said before an offensive type of a shot. It's going to be strictly defensive to keep you in the point so that possibly you can get an offensive shot right after that and again with table tennis, once you get to intermediate to more advanced play, everything happens a lot faster than in like tennis or anything else. These shots are--you basically hit in the shot and you're recoiling back in your ready position as quickly as possible and being ready in set up for that next shot and trying to stay in the center of the table. So we're going to go ahead and give that a try. Little deep. So like I said, also you're doing is turning your body, taking your step and going low to high across with your pedal in that backhand position and just coming low to high putting--trying to hit towards in that, hit some pace to it and actually put some top spin on it and loop it, hopefully into the other side of the court or the table and be able to keep yourself in the point long enough to win the next shot."

on 1/14/2009 It looks like in this video Scott is trying to apply tennis technique to table tennis. The backhand principles in table tennis are quite different, e.g. you do not cross your feet and hit the ball in front of your body and not to the side.
