"SCOTT BROWDER: Now we're going to talk about hitting not really a slam but a hard shot with some top spin off with the back hand. We showed you how to punch the ball with forehand and drive the ball deep and hard. What you want to do is be able to hit the same type of the shot with your back hand in order to accomplish this, you have to--it's major importance to make sure you impart amount of top spin on the ball. Also finishing towards the net, your stroke production is going to be low to high for the top spin and coming in almost leading with your elbow with the back hand, coming in towards the net and hitting through finishing high with your back hand stroke. And also stepping into--towards the table so that your stroke production is not only putting some top spin on the ball but also coming into the ball to impart a lot of pace to your shot. So we'll go ahead and hit a couple and see what it--and the quicker that you can snap your paddle through the ball, the better result you're going to have as far as pace on the shot. So, and if you bust into the net, explode into the net, that will give you your best chance of hitting a descent back hand shot where the ball will have enough top spin to land on the table and also have enough pace on it so that you will be able to end the point quickly hopefully and again if you can angle those shots, either the forehand or the backhand shot, to either side, you're going to create more of an angle in which your opponent is not going to be able to reach this far 'cause he's going to be going side to side and then again, like I said before, don't be afraid to hit at the person, because a lot of time, you can hand cuff him he's not make it to shot off. So that's--an important thing there to be able to learn is to be able to put some pace on at backhand especially."

on 1/23/2009 This person is not an expert. This shot is done adequately, but there is a lot missing from all these videos. You never see an actual rally. Table tennis is a sport where you have to react to what the other person is doing -- rather like a combination of chess and boxing, done at high speed. It is not just about individual shots. If you made a shot like this with a big follow through, the ball might come back so quickly that you are still finishing your stroke and have no chance to react to the next ball.
