Great defensive strategy that you can use in your intermediate game is to be able to hit a lob. A lob is basically, all you're doing is putting some top spin on the ball and you're hitting it up over your opponent that has come to the net. Your opponent is coming to the net and he's going to be challenging you. Instead of you trying to force to hit a great shot either down the line or cross court winner, I find it's easier, for myself, to hit a nice lob. Especially if the guy's got his momentum going towards the net. All you have to do is wind up, hit your top spin but you're angling up. You're not hitting straight towards the net. You're hitting up with a follow through going up higher, not coming down towards the net. All you're going to do is, you're angling the shot up with top spin. You have to hit top spin with a lob to bring it down into the court. You're going to loop it and you're going to lob it up over the top of the guy's head. It doesn't make any difference if you're hitting it to an angle or straight down the middle, as long as you're getting the ball over the guy's head he's going to be up there trying to hit his overhead. You want to get the ball up over his head with some spin on it so that once it gets over his head it drops down onto the court. He has to go running after it. Chances are, if you've hit one far enough, close enough to the baseline he's going to have no chance at getting a return of the point.
