"Hi, this is Sean Hobson, for Expert Village. What we want to talk about now is when our defensive tackle is engaged with an offensive tackle and they're working against each other, sometimes the defender will get a little frustrated and he'll give up on the play prematurely. We want our tackles to continue to go through the play until the play is completely past him or the play is completely done. If these two get engaged in a situation (video demo) and he's trying to rush in, the quarterback can do one of two things. This quarterback may step up to throw. We don't want our defender to give up on the play and think he doesn't matter in this. We want him to come in and as the quarterback steps to throw we want to try to always get a hand up. A lot of times you'll see that the quarterback isn't looking at the defender. He's trying to throw a short pass trying to dump it off down the middle. If our defender gets his hands up enough and high enough he may deflect the pass and it may end up being an interception for us. So our guy has to stay involved. The other thing is that the quarterback might decide to tuck the ball and run. If our defender has already given up on the play he's not going to be in a position to come out and make the big stop. So, remember, as a defensive tackle always stay involved in the play. Try to get your hand up and try to bat the ball down if the quarterback's throwing in your direction."
