Basketball, b-ball, hoops—these are all names for one of the most popular games in America. Whether it’s professional play in the NBA, college games, the local high school team, a friendly round of one-on-one round, or an outdoor street game at the playground court, basketball is exciting and fast-paced, pitting player against player and skill against skill. Having strong fundamentals like dribbling, passing, and shooting is the key to the success of any aspiring player or team. Though flashy dunks, trick shots, and off the wall dribbling antics are fun to watch and have their place, they often create a “superstar” mentality that ultimately hurts the team if not put in check. What makes basketball great is the combination of individual talent and team strategy, ultimately producing a match that’s sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.
In this free video basketball lesson, an experienced coach will tell you how to set up and play man-to-man defense. This defensive strategy is typically used by teams with athletic players that are a good match-up for the opponent. In man defense, the defender guards the same player all over the court, with occasional switches to double-team a star on the other team. You will learn how to play out various scenarios in this series, such as what to do when the player next to the one you are guarding catches a pass. The coach also includes tips on trapping, rebounding and taking a charge.
"Hi, this is Sean Hobson. What we're going to talk about right now is the importance of using a man-to-man defense. Now, when you use a man-to-man defense, it's the most basic and fundamental type of defense. Man-to-man defense obviously means, man-to-man. If you've got players that are good and skilled enough, than you want to play man-to-man defense for the simple fact that this is guy is only concerned with this man. Now later, we're going to show you a little bit about "help-side" man defense, but the main thing with the man defense, with playing it is, that you've got to have players that are good enough that can play these guys in a man-on-man style. Sometimes it's going to exploit people in your defense. If you have a guy that's not a very good defender and you're playing man-to-man, you might want to put him on one of the weaker offensive players. But it gives you a lot of variance in your defense. If you're playing a zone style, you're going to have a person staying in a specific area. But a man-on-man style is you're going to have to follow them, you're going to have to bust through screens and do some different things. So, I like a man-on-man defense but only if you've got the guys that can run a good man-to-man defense can you actually use that style of defense."
