"Hi this is Sean Hobson for Expert Village. What we want to talk about right now is when running an effective sweep or pitch play, the quarterback is very important in the way that he carries the play out. We always want our quarterbacks to carry a play out, not to hand the ball off and just stop on the play and watch the play develop. We always want him to do something else, because at some point in time, especially if you have a quarterback that runs a lot, you're going to force your linebackers and defensive backs to really stay on that quarterback until the play is over. So if we can have our quarterbacks go ahead and fake it first of all. And then when he gives it to the tailback, if we can have him pop it out like he's going to run it, a lot of times that's going to make them go ahead and focus on the running back, or rather the quarterback as a running back, and it's going to make them hold a little bit longer so we can get this guy through the hole. One other thing we can do with our quarterbacks is after they carry out that hand off, we can have them turn around like they're throwing, and sometimes that will hold linebackers back a little bit longer, or it'll hold the cornerbacks back in their spots, keeping them from coming up and making a tackle. So that's just one way the quarterback can carry out the play and stay actively involved."
