Summary: Get the basketball down low. Learn how to feed the ball to a post player as a shooting guard in youth basketball in this free basketball lesson video from an experienced coach.
"Hi, this is Sean Hobson, and right now we're working with our shooting guards. And one important thing that our shooting guard is going to do is not only shooting within the offense, but also at some point in time they're going to have to feed the post. Because if you have good post players, you're going to use your guards on the perimeter to feed the ball into the post for our offense to work. Also, as being a shooting guard, you have to understand that the more that the post touches the ball, the less concerned that they are with you, which is going to open you up for further shots. So, these guys are your friends. You want to get the post the ball, let them score, and that's going to open you up for further shots later on in the game. So, what we want to do right now is show you a couple of quick ways in which we're going to feed the post. The first is, if our post defender is playing in the back, we can go ahead and throw a good chest pass in there because our post has good position--go ahead--we can throw a good chest pass in there, or we can even throw a bounce pass at that angle. Now front him down low. Remember, our posts have to tell you where they want the ball. So, if he wants the ball on the top hand, he's got to show. We've got to fake the ball, and then we've got to drop the bounce pass down on the back side so the post player can work to the inside. Now, guard him on the top side. If he's guarding him then on the top side, he wants to fake the ball up, and then he's going to step around, he's going to drop a nice pass down there. The last we're going to show you is the lob, and that's when our defender is fronting the post. We want our post player to push the man up, and this time when we throw the pass we want to throw it long enough that it goes over the posts head so he can go and get the ball and finish it underneath. And this is what it looks to throw a good lob pass. You can see that he got it up high enough to clear both the defender and to give the offensive a chance to catch the ball, go up, and finish it. If you're shooting guards good at feeding the post, later on in the game it's going to get him a lot of open shots."
