Youth Point Guard Skills: Penetrate and Pass

"Hi, this is Sean Hobson and right now we're working with our point guards. What we really want to focus on in this clip is our point guards being able to get the other players open for shots and we're going to use the penetration on this. We really want to look, when we're looking for a point guard, who's going to be the point guard of our team, we really want somebody that can beat people off the dribble and can take the ball down and penetrate inside the defense. That's going to open up our shots, that's called a "draw and kick" because when he penetrates, all these defenders, when these defenders come now, we've got our post defenders that are going to draw to him, we've got this guy's man that is going to draw to him, everybody's going to draw to this guy. Now, what he's got to do then, is he's got to penetrate in, he's got to hit a good jump stop, and then he's got to be able to kick the ball out. That's going to create this guy being open, that's possibly going to make this post player right here be open. If we can get guard that's going to penetrate inside the defense, it's going to open up everybody else on the floor. If you've got a point guard that's able to take the ball in and draw the defense, your offense is going to be very successful. So when looking for a point guard, try to find somebody that can get in there, can draw the defense and can kick out for wide open shots."
