Series Summary

Hunting the practice of tracking, pursuing and sometimes killing animals for food, recreation or trade. In today's sportsman's world, hunting is a term used strictly for legal activities including the pursuit of game animals such as deer, bears and some birds, and not considered the same etymologically as poaching, which is the illegal pursuit of such prey. Some animals, such as bears, can be dangerous to humans and are generally hunted with the intention of killing, but many animals are hunted by means of traps and scouting with the intention of capture and release. The hunter as a sportsman is interested in the pursuit of prey, the relationship between the animal and the wild, and sometimes the execution of skill with a firearm. Hunting game to control population or for pure recreation hones a gun owner's skill as a marksman by forcing him or her to quickly learn how to aim and shoot both moving and motionless targets. In this free video clip series, our expert will discuss and demonstrate several pertinent and useful techniques and tips for the hunter as a sportsman, including the explanation and use of tree stands during pursuit. Learn how to scout, grunt and use scrapes during the hunting process. Additionally, the equipment and supplies needed for hunting are discussed, and the types of shooting lanes used are demonstrated. Finally, our expert will teach you how to aim for both moving and motionless targets.

"Hi! I’m Robert Rogers. Today we are going to be talking about the proper scouting for tree stand locations. I’m going to leave the tree stand here because it is a little bit easier to scout around for a couple of hours and see where you are going to put your tree stand without having it on your back. It’s a good location here because there are a lot of watering holes. You’ve got a good little marshy swampy area back here that I have to obviously drink too. You’ve got a lot of good tracks on the ground. There are a lot of good fresh signs that the deer have been here recently. You want to make sure your tree isn’t dead. You got to make sure it is a solid tree, straight up and down if you can. Something with a little cover but has good shooting lanes; like that one back there but it’s got too much water around it. In the morning when I come here a 5:00 am, I don’t think I want to deal with that water. Ah, about perfect. Nice cover. Got these little trees on the side to kind of help conceal you. In case they are looking at you, might be able to talk behind them. Solid, sturdy, about the right size, got a good shooting lane, another great shooting lane, looks like a good deer path or deer run right through here, maybe another one right back through here, kind of want to have an X with two deer lanes or deer runs cross, kind of hunt right off that, X marks the spot so to speak. Looks like about perfect location. I think I’ll choose this tree right here."
