Series Summary

The word treadmill originated as a synonym for a step mill, a simple pre-industrial mill where workers would walk the steps of a wheel, which in turn would grind grain. Early versions of the treadmill were used in 1800s English prisons to discipline prisoners. Models similar to the ones in use today were developed for scientists and doctors to study heart and lung disease. Upon reading about the treadmill in technical magazines and journals, rich recluses seized the opportunity provided by this device to take a long walk without leaving the comfort and security of your own home. Treadmills have also become popular in health clubs.

"Hi, my name is Rotem I'm an exercise physiologist and I'm here on behalf of Expert Village. Before even getting started and getting on the treadmill machine I want to emphasize on the important stuff. Walking at least 3 hours a week is associated with decrease the risk with heart disease, while walking 7 hours a week is associated with decrease of the risk of breast cancer and type 2 diabetes. From these reasons I really recommend combining at least walking. You can do it on the treadmill, outside or on a different aerobic exercise machine exercises by trying to combine it. Start with at least 3 times a week, you can start with 1/2 an hour each time and then try to increase it until you get to 5 times a week. Try to get maybe 5 times a week one hour a day and if some days you're in a hurry, try and even go 20 minutes, it doesn't matter just try to combine it to everyday routine. "
