"Ron Gotlin. Biscayne Park Aikido Club Biscayne Park, Florida. I’m sensei and lead instructor. This technique is called Mia Otoshi and what’s happening in this technique is I’m trying to find a way to get behind his arm. In Aikido, you never want to be directly in front of the person, where we’re trading punches with each other. We always try to be behind the arm where I have an advantage controlling this arm and taking that arm out of the way. So what’s happening is in Mia Otoshi is for some reason, I exchanged attack and I wound up here, which is a danger position because that other hand is there, so I twist my hips and turn in this fashion, that puts me behind the arm and now I can attack his arm. So what it looks like in real time is - break the balance, come up and throw. And from this side, again for whatever the reason, I wound up kind of in harms way, I twist to get out of harms way, break the balance and throw. And that’s called Mia Otoshi, an arm throwing, and arm locking technique. Now basically in Mia Otoshi, when I have the arm in this direction, we’re kind of gentle with him, but I really could if I wanted to dislocate the elbow here, but that would not serve our purposes again. Thank you and we’ll be right back. "
