"Ron Gotlin. Biscayne Park Aikido Club Biscayne Park, Florida. I’m sensei and lead instructor. This technique is Shomen Ate. Shomen Ate is a strike, Ate Japanese word for Ate means to strike, sho is first, men means heads. So, it’s the first head strike. As James attacks from a static position here, as he attacks, I’m going to block, find his chin, step between his legs and throw. So it’s simulating this palm heel strike to the face. And that same technique again from this side, all these techniques are based on using the other person’s strength and reaction against them and me stepping off the line. The idea is for his posture and balance to be broken and my posture and balance to stay erect. That gives me the advantage and especially when there’s a size disparity and in this case you can see that James is much taller than I am. Thank you, we’ll be right back"
