"Hi! I’m Paul from Eastern Mountain Sports on behalf of expertvillage.com. In this clip, I am going to demonstrate how to properly maintain and carry a mountaineering ice axe. Ice axes are generally used for mountaineering. First and foremost, make sure that there are no hairline cracks or fractures along the entire shaft on all sides. Also, there should be no cracks or fractures on the head or the tip of your ice axe. Make sure that the head is secure on the shaft and that the tip is also. They should be very sharp. For safety reasons, always make sure that it is sharp to the manufacturer’s specifications. When stowing an ice axe, stow it on the outside of your climbing bag. You never want to put it inside because it will cut or tear essential webbing or your harness. That is key to safety. "
