Series Summary

The canoe has been used for thousands of years to explore and trade upon waterways and seas. Though motorboats have, for the most part, replaced the canoe for commercial trade canoes and kayaks are very popular as recreational water craft. Additionally there remains many places that cannot be explored and whitewater that cannot be conquered in a motorized watercraft; not to mention that traveling by canoe or by kayak can be quieter and more tranquil than a boat with a loud gas or diesel engine. A canoe or kayak can be used by two or more persons depending on the size of the vessel. It is easy, fun, and sometimes comical to learn canoeing and kayaking, but it is important to learn necessary safety equipment and techniques before getting into the water.

In this free online video series learn from canoeing instructors Ray Temeyer, Ben Temeyer, and Antonio Dell'Aglio as they teach safety tips and demonstrate canoeing and kayaki techniques such as: proper use of la life-jacket, where to find a certified lifejacket, essential supplies, safety precautions, how to correctly paddle with one and two persons, how to paddle a kayak, how to transport a canoe by hand for short and long distances, and how to be aware of the wind.

Video Transcript

" On behalf of expretvillage.com, my name is Raymond T. Meyer of Los Island Voyage, Miami, Florida. And this is Ben and Antonio. And today were going to touch on the subject of beginning of canoing and kayaking. The canoes has had a long history in human affairs. It started with Native Americans hunting and fishing; now they use as recreational mostly in modern times. Most canoes today are made of fibers glass or aluminum, and you can still find some made out of wood. Most canoes have pointed ends, which what difference them from most other boats. They also have flotation devices in the front and back so it would float even if it is filled with water or someone is sitting in it. Canoes have a front, which is called the bow, and the stern, which is the back. There is also the two sides. And most canoes today are much more stable then original ones because they have flat bottoms. Which means that they will not tip just as easily."
