The game of pool, or pocket billiards, was developed, like other cue sports, from outdoor stick-and-ball lawn games similar to golf or croquet. Pool was originally played on tables without pockets. Holes were added later, used first as a hazard and later as a means of scoring. The term 'pool' was derived from 'poolrooms,' which were off-track betting facilities, where gamblers would 'pool' their money to determine odds on horse races. These facilities were often equipped with a few billiards tables, and words 'pool' and 'billiards' soon became interchangeable. In this series of free video lessons, you’ll learn the basics of the game of pool, including the proper shooting form, how to hit the cue ball and how to use English to alter a shot. Expert Richard Buccola offers tips and techniques to help you develop a litany of shots that will make your next visit to a pool hall a fun and hopefully triumphant experience.
"My name is Richard Buccola and I am going to introduce you to Pool 101. Pool is a game that has been around a long time. It is played at many different levels. You’ve got amateurs, beginners and experts. It is usually a game that is associated with a hustling type of game where you’ve got hustlers who take your money and I am going to get into a little bit of everything as far as pool. I basically just want to show the basics. There are so many different games; 8 ball, 9 ball, straight pool, I could go on forever. One pocket pool, less pool, 8 pool, last pocket 8 ball but what we are really going to try to stress today is the mechanics of pool; how to hold the stick, use different types of English. When I come back, I will be glad to show you that."
