Series Summary

Karate is a martial art that originated in Okinawa prior to the 1874 annexation of Okinawa by Japan. It has been influenced by many people groups and famous martial artists from China, Japan, and Okinawa including Sokon Matsumura, Anko Itosu, Anko Asato, Funakoshi Gichi, and Ohtsuka Hironori. The Karate student incorporates linear punches, kicks, throwing elbows, and knee strikes primarily as a means of self defense; the highest success and honor of the art is for the student to employ Karate without harming the opponent. Funakoshi Gichi once said, “The ultimate aim of Karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants” This ideology was captured in the movie “The Karate Kid” where Mr. Myagi teaches Daniel LaRusso the art of Karate as a form of self defense against bullies.

In this free online video series learn Karate from second degree black belt Qaeem Garner as he teaches and demonstrates Karate moves and techniques such as the back stance, cat stance, forward stance, front kick, horse stance, kata three, low block, mid block, rising block, roundhouse kick, side kick, reverse high punch, reverse mid punch, and the reverse low punch.

" How are you doing? My name is Qaeem and on behalf of Expert Village, I’m going to be demonstrating Shorin-Ryu Karate. One of the first parts of Shorin-Ryu Karate, you’re going to have is the karate uniform, which in Japanese is the Gi. The Gi consists of two pieces, while three pieces including the belt. You are going to have your top, your Gi pants and you’re going to have the Gi jacket. You’ll also have your belt. The proper way of tying your belt is, you want to make sure that both parts are equal and then you are just going to let those hang to the ground. Then you are going to start in the middle of your belt and you’re going to put that right along your navel. You’re going to slide that all the way around and bring it around to the front. Both parts should be equal coming around the front. You’re going to bring this part, which is your left part; you’re going to slide that over and under. That’s going to become the top and it’s going to become the bottom. Then you are going to take the left strap and it is going to come over the right strap, you’re going to just pull together, like so. That is tying the belt, the karate uniform. Once again, in Japanese that is called the Karate Gi. My name is Qaeem on behalf of Expert Village, thank you for watching."
