"Hi! This is Pat Weber with the San Diego Surfing Academy for expertvillage.com. Depending on where in the world you are going to be doing your surfing, there is going to be different conditions—water temperature and air temperature. We are talking about Southern California, and most of the year we are wearing a full suit. All the way to the wrist, all the way to the ankles; usually a 3-2. Three millimeter body and 2 millimeter arm. If you had a second suit, it would probably be another 3-2 that you could put on dry when the other one is wet. Let's say you've got warm water, cold air or wind conditions: sleeves all the way to the wrist, short legs for the warmer water. You might consider a spring suit for warm air, warm water and if it was a chillier than just getting away with trunks. If you had cool water and warm air, short sleeves, legs all the way to the ankles would be a good way to go. "
