When you are just starting out, it doesn't really matter whether it's got 1 fin, 2 fins or 3 fins so long as it has a fin for stability. For the longest time, a single large fin in the center was the best thinking, and it is still a valid concept. Two fins out on the rail creates fast, loose surfing, but for stability on a vertical face, 3 fins in a configuration called a thruster. Nothing compares; it's the choice of pro's since the 80's. "
