Video: Installing a New Bicycle Tube, Step One

Expert cyclist gives tips on installing a new bicycle tire tube, like adding a little air to the tube, and lining the label up with the valve hole, in this free bicycle repair video.

So, installing a new tube in your tire begins with obviously removing the new tube from the box. They usually come set up like this, completely deflated. Remove the elastic, shake it out, the next step, which I feel is pretty important, some people don't install tubes with some air in it but I always put some air in the tube before an installation, not a lot but enough to give it some shape. Trying to tuck a flat tube into a tire is usually asking for trouble and pinches. Just enough so it has some form. Too much air will make the installation difficult. And here we go, tubes got a little shape, go to our tire and rim. Again, try to line up the label with the valve hole, as we discussed before, it helps finding where flats are and where things may be stuck in your tire if you do get another flat. First step is to put the bead of the tire, this wirey edge here, over half the rim, half meaning just one side here. So, I put the bottom in here, start bringing the rest of the bead over, you have no need for any tools at this point if it's a good fit and the tire's half on the rim. Stay with the valve hole here, I use my thumb and pull away the second bead to expose the valve hole. Taking my tube I'll put the valve through here like that, take my fingers underneath the other bead lift it up over the tube.
