I'm Randy Victory, and I'm here to talk about road cycling techniques. The rule of thumb is, drink before you're thirsty, eat before you're hungry. If you're going out in colder weather, you want to dress about ten degrees cooler than you normally would to just walk around, because you'll quickly heat up on the bike, and there's not a worse enemy in the cold than a lot of sweat. So you definitely want to make sure that you dress about ten degrees cooler. Remember, you'll heat up and you'll be plenty comfortable. Unfortunately, when you're riding in the heat, the option is not to ride naked, although sometimes that might seem like a good idea. There are a lot of wicking materials available, most Lycra wicks, there are some Coolmax fabrics you can buy for jerseys, and you think a lot of riders wear that stuff just so they can look really cool on the bike. The truth is that stuff works a lot better than cotton when it comes to staying cool in the heat. Make sure if you're going to be riding in the heat and the sun, that you wear plenty of sun block. SPF-45 is a good idea if you're going to be out for a lot of hours. The other thing is eye protection. I never ride without eye protection. Not just because the sun could burn your eyes out, but bugs, road debris, anything can fly into your eyes, and at thirty miles an hour, it can result in a visit to the hospital.
