"If you are predominantly riding mountain bikes I recommend using the same type of pedal on your road bike as you do on your mountain bike. One less thing to get use to, a little bit cheaper because you can use the same shoes, and there is not going to be a marked performance difference. For instance I use Crank Brothers clipless pedals on my mountain bikes so I use one on my road bike as well. These pedals are pretty nice for road use, they are among the lightest pedals on the market and they have four sides that clip into them so it allows me to quickly and with some degree of assurance to get in at like stop lights and stuff like that. If you decide that you want to be a more hardcore dedicated road rider you can get specific shoes and pedal systems for road bikes which use similar principals for mountain bike pedals, but there is less of an emphasis of getting into them and out of them quickly and they tend to only have one sided entry for light weight and stuff like that. A shoe designed specifically for road use is going to be extremely lightweight and is not going to have any tread or anything like that for walking on the bottom so even if you plan to ride aggressively on you road bike. Do a lot of competitive riding, if you plan on doing much more than walking twenty or thirty yards at a time you really want to go with a recessed style shoe mountain bike shoe because it is going to make that experience a lot easier and more pleasurable."
