"Just like on a mountain bike, on a road bike you want to run the least amount of chain as possible. The nice thing about road bikes is they never have rear suspension, so you don't have to worry about chain growth under compression. So, there's a couple rules of thumb that you can use to set up proper chain length. One is, I'm in my biggest chain ring here, my biggest cog back here, that's the most amount of chain that can be taken up in my drive train, and you can see I couldn't go any shorter, with the chain length that I have now. There's no way to take a link out. Another way to assess proper chain length on a Shimano system is these two pulley wheels -- the top one's obscured by the derailleur, are vertical. That's another quick way to assess chain length on a road bike. And the reason it's important -- besides the fact that it's lighter and shifts better, is because of these differences in front tooth size, if my chain was too long when I was riding in the small ring in the front, and the easier gears in the back, my chain would rub on the derailleur. So that's why chain length is pretty important on a road bike. Different than a mountain bike in that you can run it as short as possible without having to worry about adverse side effects."
