"As I was shifting through the gears earlier, I noticed that there was a really significant increase over normal in the amount of pressure that it took for me to shift up into an easier gear. It's also not as precise as it should be. So, my first inclination is to check to see if the cables feel gummy. Another thing to check is to make sure that the derailleur's not bent. We're going to check to see if the derailleur's bent, first. To do that, I'm going to shift it into the easiest gear, by using that thumb trigger there. Then I'm going to pedal, and look from the back, make sure everything's straight. I'm going to pedal it, and I'm going to push it through the gears, not using the shift tension. Just to see how it works. Seems to be ok, everything seems to be tracking well, which is going to lead me to believe that there's an issue somewhere with my cable or housing. Maybe it's gummy, maybe there's a break in the housing. So I'm moving up, from the derailleur forward, and I see some scuffing here, looks like this has hit some rock, which is a bad sign. Move up... and, yep, this appears to be the culprit right here. I see that some strands of the shift housing have actually pulled through the ferrell here, which is what you call the end of the housing run. So that's obviously what's leading to this thing not shifting as well as it could be. So that gives me the opportunity to replace this section of housing here, and also show you how to replace the cable on this unit. I get a better riding bike, and you guys get the benefit of seeing somebody do it."
