"Now we're going to go over the most flagrant of all flavorant fouls, this is scratching, scratching is when the cue ball goes into a pocket. After a shot following a shot or during the same shot and which another ball may also follow into pocket. For this instance we have the 2 ball setup for the side pocket shot now instantly the 2 ball is the object ball and the cue ball follows the object ball in. In this case even thought the 2 ball was pocketed it is a scratch. Now scratching an 8 ball depending on either you're playing a traditional or tournament rules result in either the cue ball being shot from the kitchen. Which are marked by the 2 dots on the table at the breaking at the table, the cue ball must then pass that line made by those 2 dots before striking an object ball. Now the object ball can be placed either on bank shot or a cut shot on either end of the table from that point on. Ball in hand is when the opponent gets to place the cue ball anywhere along the table this is anywhere along the table minus an inch and a half to the face of an object ball. This meaning that the person can not come up and put the cue ball directly onto a 14 ball which is usually the case if the ball is so close to the rail that they can barely squeeze the cue in, this is unacceptable but having ball in hand has its own advantages."
