Series Summary

Rugby was developed from a game that was played at Rugby School in England. Rugby uses a ball that is shaped like a prolate spheroid, much like an American football. In rugby, two teams of fifteen or seven players (depending on the version played) are trying to score the most points. Points can be scored in various ways including some of the following: touching the ground over the opponent’s goal line with the ball in hand, a conversion play where a player kicks the ball at the goal line where the previous touch-down occurred kicking the ball above the crossbar and between the uprights of the field post. Scoring in rugby is similar to the rules of American football.

In this series of expert videos, you will learn more about the rough-and-tumble sport of rugby. Learn from experienced rugby player Miriam Richmond as she demonstrates and explains game rules such as open play binding, what rugby equipment is necessary, drop kick rules, how to pass, place kick, side step, tackle, drop kick, and grubber kick.

I strongly suspect that the person you had "drop kicking" is not your normal drop kicker. Or if she was she has been replaced. There are many separate elements to the drop kick and they vary depending upon the type of kick you are trying to make:
1) Short and high restart
2) Long restart
3) Kick for goal (though it is really more like (2) in many situations

So, we hear nothing about holding the ball, timing, leg swing (hockey/golf swing etc) or plant foot placement.

101 on this should be about a restart/22 drop out on a 15-20 metre ball (high trajectory, something to chase for your forwards) and how to do it.
Yes - I can (reasonably) consistently kick that - but coaching that is something I am working on. Thus my visit here.

" Hello! I’m Miriam, this is Bess, and today we are going to be going over some basic rugby skills. Right now, we are talking about the drop kick. All she is going to do is hold the ball in front of her, point down, and then literally drop it on the ground so it bounces ever so slightly. Then she’ll kick it with a straight foot. Now we are going to show you in slow motion. Hold the ball directly out in front of you, point it down, drop it, and then kick it as it bounces up. "
