A lot of people seem to think there's some kind of black magic to those knobs they have on their forks and don't dare to 'mess' with the settings they came with, but once you know what they do (and how they do it) it's really easy to dial your fork to give a much better performance for your weight and riding style

"This also has a gold knob on it called a gate adjust knob. Gate is the blow off of this damper. So as I turn the gold knob, that changes the threshold for the lock out to come on. So, I have the gate dialed all the way in, and that means when I push down, the forks locked out, it's not going to move. So this is in lock out position right now. As I dial the gate knob back, it breaks off progressively easier. So with the gate all the way off and the fork in what should be locked out position, it moves like there's nothing there. And as I add a little bit more--so that's another way of adding platform, or low speed damping. But it's not exactly the same because it's a mechanical threshold--you know a stable platform versus compression damping. They're fundamentally different things because when something is locked out and then unlocks, the damping characteristics, the curve, if you graft it, would be very different. It would be much sharper and more of a spike, then if you just added more damping progressively over the course of things. On my downhill bike here, I have one knob that controls both the rebound and the compression damping. So, by turning this knob to the right it adds both rebound and compression damping to the fork, because the internals of that are very similar to these internals which I showed you, where there's only one shim stack. So that just changes one needle valve."
